Enterprise DERMS: From Managing new DER connections to full Market Operations
This Utility University course is open to any attendee at an additional fee. To pre-register and reserve a seat, please visit the registration resource center or reach out to info@distributech.com.
As DER increase in their number and magnitude, our industry is challenged with the reality that we need new analytical processes and automation solutions for end-to-end management of DER. This course will address the comprehensive life-cycle challenges of DER for utility operations and planning, customer service, metering, DER aggregators, and ISO markets. These key functional areas include Program Management, Customer and Device Registration, Grid Connection Impact Analysis, Forecasting, Bidding, Scheduling, Dispatch, Monitoring, Metering, Settlement, Billing, Performance Analysis, and Cyber Security. These combined Enterprise DERMS technologies will be presented that can help ISOs, Aggregators, Utility DSOs, and their end-use customers meet this challenge.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the types and characteristics of Distributed Energy Resources (DER), and their impacts on utility operations, with emphasis on distribution operations planning, real-time distribution operations, post-operations reporting, and DER-related data exchanges
- Learn about the present and future ramifications of FERC Order 2222
- Learn about IEEE 1547 and IEEE 2030.5 standards, what they contain, and how utilities can leverage and benefit from them
- Understand the key functional requirements required by an Enterprise DERMS, to manage the DER operations in a safe, reliable, compliant, and economic manner. These core functions include:
- DERMS Network Operations
- DERMS Market Operations
- DERMS Customer and Programs Management
- DERMS Analytics
- DER Device Management
- DERMS Field Service
- Present best practices for architecting, selecting, procuring, and implementing such solutions.
- Present experiences of a leading utility with DER integration, operations, and management using DERMS.
Specific knowledge, skills and/or capabilities that attendees should acquire through this course:
- Help electric utilities prepare for the challenges posed by the increased levels of Distributed Energy Resources (DER), including:
- DER Connection processes (operations planning/engineering processes that typically take place months/weeks ahead of real-time operations)
- Customer DER Programs Management
- Customer Marketing and Engagement
- DER device management
- DER operations and market management:
- Day-ahead and real-time distribution operations during normal, planned and forced outages, and other emergency conditions, DER aggregation, market clearing and market operations
- Post-operations reliability and compliance measurement and validation reporting, and
- DER-related information exchanges between distribution aggregators, DSOs, ISOs, and other entities (e.g. planning, Distribution, Transmission, and Generation, including Demand Response, operations, wholesale/retail markets, regulators, aggregators, and other applications)
Who should attend:
Electric Utilities of all types and sizes, ISO Energy Market Operators, DER Aggregators, Regulators, DERMS, ADMS, and market operations and customer engagement software and hardware providers, system integrators and consultants
Prerequisites:
Basic understanding of electric grid management, wholesale energy markets, DER (technologies, installation, and operations), and customer program development and operations
