Advanced Distribution Operations

Growing Distributed Energy Resource (DER) deployments and new technologies are leading to higher variability and unusual/unpredictable power flows within the distribution system, raising safety related concerns from system operators directing field crews. It is becoming increasingly important for utilities to implement advanced systems to provide their operators with the tools to continue to safely operate the distribution grid. Join Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) for a presentation on their journey to set up a working and accurate Distribution Power Flow (DPF) model in their Advanced Distribution management System and how it is currently utilized by system operators in conjunction with switching operations in Switch Order Management (SOM). This session explores both common and unique challenges SMUD faced in configuring and refining their distribution system model, validating results, and processes that were created and implemented to handle ongoing system changes in the distribution system. SMUD will also share the benefits realized from DPF when paired with SOM.
