The Prosumer and the Energy Transition: A Close-up Look at Australia

February 26, 2024
W313
Australia in the Afternoon Workshop

This workshop is free to attend but pre-registration is required.

Session 1: Overview of the Australian Energy Transition
2:05 pm - 3:15 pm

Australia has moved from relying on coal for 95% of its electricity generation to a country with the highest penetration of rooftop solar in the world. With over 1 in 3 households installing solar, representing 80%+ adoption in some areas, management of power quality and reliability has been a huge challenge across the day. This session will look at forecasting challenges; the political and regulatory issues that brought the country to the state it is in today; system security issues including a review of 2016 state-wide blackout in South Australia as well as the role of the electricity networks in rolling out new technology responses.

This session will be presented by senior Australian utility industry executives and industry experts.  It will focus on the three challenges in managing solar and EV growth in a Net Zero environment: managing operational performance in a rapidly changing environment; actionable responses and new technologies for upgrading the grid infrastructure; and improving grid resiliency through dynamic DER and EV charging control.

Session 2: What’s Next for Australia’s Energy Future
3:45 pm - 5:00 pm

Description: Australia has the world's largest interconnected electricity grid and has seen the world's fastest uptake of residential solar, with over 1 in 3 households installing rooftop solar over the past 10 years. With forecast rapid uptake in electric vehicles, this session will examine the challenges faced by Australian electricity networks in managing reliable customer supply and cost while meeting the challenges of mass DER adoption and the requirements of Net Zero transformation across the national electricity grid.

Join us after Session 2 for a networking reception in room W314!
