Case study: A framework for grid modernization with Puget Sound Energy
Utilities are experiencing an unprecedented acceleration in change and development of new technology in order to achieve aggressive clean energy goals or address risks. Therefore, in addition to "what" we develop, it is just as important to establish the methodology of "how" we approach new tech development in order to ensure we are looking at the right categories and achieving the expected value.
Therefore, Puget Sound Energy has worked hard to develop its Grid Modernization New Tech Framework that clarifies the approach and the roles involved. This framework has helped to distinguish the phases of development from:
1) Intake of new ideas
2) Discover PSE and Industry context & opportunity
3) Define the plan and financial needs to develop new tech
4) Develop and build
5) Validate value
6) Integrate into the business
PSE has been leveraging this framework for about two years and has recorded the value it brings from 10 projects.
