VELCO embraces digital transformation and enhancing workforce development
Like most utilities, Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) is experiencing significant workforce changes. Retiring operators, planners, engineers, and technicians have resulted in the loss of invaluable experience and knowledge. Furthermore, new reliability challenges require more coordination between teams.
Join Vermont Electric Power Company and Siemens to learn about VELCO’s digital transformation and workforce development initiatives.
VELCO’s new “Advancing Grid Intelligence through Learning Experiences” (AGILE) internship cohort program, built on principles of agile project management, enables emerging talent to make meaningful and tangible contributions to VELCO’s strategic projects to maintain or enhance the reliability, affordability, and sustainability of Vermont's transmission system. In particular, AGILE interns contribute to VELCO’s developing standards-based interoperable solution to replace informal knowledge transfer, eliminate duplicative efforts, lower costs, and, most importantly, improve safety and reliability.
This network model management solution from Siemens embeds context, traceability, and integrity into a single source of truth, supported by efficient inter-departmental and inter-organizational workflows. For example, with time-based modeling, planners can automatically share new transmission upgrades across departments – operations, protection, and engineering – providing teams with a common way to understand and collaborate on projects. This solution empowers current and future employees to upskill, explore integration methods, and embrace digital transformation.
