SDG&E mobile battery storage use cases and valuation

March 27, 2025
C4
Reliability and Resilience Energy Storage DER

In this session, panelists will present the pre-commercial demonstration and evaluation of utility mobile battery energy storage systems, including perspectives from SDG&E. This presentation covers the advantages, implementation methods, and outcomes of using an MBESS in different use cases, including stacked benefits like load smoothing, peak shaving, and resiliency functions.

The presentation will discuss the purchasing experience, testing approach, results achieved, and main findings from the project including the benefits in these areas:

  • Safety – Deployment of an MBESS contributed to overall better site safety through quiet operation and reduced risk of a fuel spill
  • Improved reliability and power quality – MBESS units could be strategically deployed to black start and carry downstream loads
  • Improved performance of the utility power system – MBESS deployment contributed to reducing circuit loading and electrical losses
  • Lower GHG emissions – Deploying a mobile battery has significantly less GHG emissions than an equivalent diesel generator, especially when charged with renewable energy resources
  • Lower operating costs – MBESS have a lower operating cost than diesel generators, but that alone is not enough to overcome the significant additional upfront purchase or lease costs
