The National Incident Management System (NIMS) provides stakeholders across the emergency response community with the shared vocabulary, systems, and processes to successfully deliver the capabilities as defined by FEMA as part of the National Preparedness System. NIMS defines operational systems that guide how personnel work together during incidents. 

This course covers more advanced topics on how NIMS can be used by utilities. 

This course covers topics including advanced emergency management business processes, the emergency of resiliency planning, managing operating periods, and software tools that can be used in emergency operations centers. The course includes an overview of the emerging forums, standards, and best practices. Also covered are the application GIS technology, the use of machine learning and AI in emergency operations and case study from a utility on the use of more advanced tools for emergency management. 

Prerequisites: 

  • Familiarity with NIMS and ICS practices and roles, or
  • Introduction to NIMS for Utilities 

Acquired Knowledge: 

  • Advanced applications of NIMS for Electric Utilities
  • Deeper understanding of the forums, standards, and best practices.
