Why Xcel chose mobile energy storage to support grid capacity
Xcel Energy is designing a mobile 1MW/2MWH energy storage system and skid-mounted interconnection platform. The driver of the project is a local public housing authority that has a new public housing development at a site with a high likelihood of capacity constraint during peak load.
Traditional capacity upgrades are scheduled for a 2028 completion date and the mobile system will support their load during peak periods until then. Once no longer needed at that location, the energy storage system will be relocated to another location where it can provide grid services.
