Emma Stewart

Chief Power Grid Scientist and Research Strategist, Idaho National Lab

Emma Stewart is the Chief Power Grid Scientist and Research Strategist at Idaho National Laboratory (INL). She previously worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) from 2017 to 2023. At LLNL, Stewart served as principal investigator on projects like CleanStart DERMS to increase energy distribution resiliency using distributed energy resources, and CINDER which identified cyber risks to power grids. CINDER won a 2019 Federal Laboratory Consortium Far West award. Stewart holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. Prior to joining the national labs, she worked as an engineer at consulting firm Behnke, Erdman, and Whitaker (BEW) conducting research for utilities on integrating renewable energy. Earlier in her career, Stewart did automotive engineering projects like designing a Formula 1 racecar as a student. She also spent a summer overhauling jet engines at Rolls-Royce. Stewart is a respected expert in power systems, renewable integration, modeling, and simulation.
