James Helmberger
James Helmberger, P.E. is Program Manager DER Integration in Omaha Public Power District’s Systems Transformation area, where he works to help OPPD navigate a changing energy reality. Jim has 36 years of experience in the electric power industry – 8 years as an electrical engineering consultant to a diverse clientele, and 28 years in engineering, operations and planning at OPPD. His utility background includes substations, T&D, protective relaying, SCADA, fossil and nuclear power plants, DG / DER / IBR, smart grid technologies, communications, utility-scale renewables, energy storage, NERC Compliance and FERC Orders. Jim has held positions from Design, Senior, and Lead to Manager, Principal and Director of Engineering. He is an occasional speaker on a variety of industry topics at local events, regional conferences and universities. Jim is a Senior Member of IEEE Power Engineering and Communications Societies, and has been active in the North American Transmission Forum, NERC MRO and SPP Regional Protective Relay Committees, and the NERC SPIDERWG effort. He is a Licensed Professional Electrical Engineer in Nebraska and Iowa and an NCEES MLE / record holder.
