James Milford
Head of Consulting Services,
Lumina Decision Systems
James Milford has eighteen years of experience in energy and environmental modeling, research and consulting. To generate actionable insights with quantitative models, James applies domain expertise in supply-side electric power generation and distributed energy resources (electric vehicles, energy efficiency, demand response, solar PV, battery storage, etc.), including in-field experience in designing and deploying clean-energy solutions. His modeling techniques are both broad and in-depth and include System Dynamics, technology diffusion, linear and nonlinear optimization, Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis, consumer choice theory, statistics, clustering, sampling, econometrics, and economic analysis.
James leads the Consulting Services team for Lumina Decision Systems, makers of the Analytica modeling platform. He was Cofounder and Director of Technology at Lumidyne Consulting with a focus on DER adoption forecasting for distribution system planning. At Navigant (now Guidehouse) he was a Managing Consultant in the Energy Practice and the Rocky Mountain region’s modeling lead. At the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, James led a multi-million-dollar project with 6 other National Labs to build the Stochastic Energy Deployment System (SEDS), a model to help the US Department of Energy manage its portfolio of R&D projects and forecast their long-term effects on greenhouse gas emissions and energy use and cost. James holds an MS in Engineering and Technology Management from the Colorado School of Mines and a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado.
