Tanuj Deora

Executive Director, Flex Coalition

Tanuj Deora has a proven history as a cleantech executive and power sector thought leader who delivers business development, market development, product, and operational impacts, including in rapid growth and turnaround opportunities. His experience includes helping lead startups in wind energy (Horizon Wind) and climatetech (Uplight) to billion dollar valuations; rebranding and leading strategic pivots at the Colorado Energy Office and at Smart Electric Power Alliance; and reorganizing utility procurement in the US Federal government to save money while realizing sustainability targets.

Tanuj has served as a board member, consulting expert, and advisor to several industry groups, including the The Flex Coalition, Rocky Mountain Institute, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the RAND corporation, the Smart Energy Consumer Collaborative, REPlus Educational Committee, the Energy Efficiency Alliance, and the Interwest Energy Alliance. He also advises a number of clean energy startups, including Hygge Power / CO-Z, Rhizome, Vor Energy, and Singularity Energy.

Tanuj recently served a two year appointment at the White House working in the Office of the US Federal Chief Sustainability Officer, leading an interagency initiative to implement the carbon-free electricity supply goals of President Biden’s executive order 14057. “Catalyzing Clean Energy Industries and Jobs through Federal Sustainability.” That work included policy development for the Council on Environmental Quality, restructuring the multi-billion dollar electricity procurement authority and function at the General Services Administration, and negotiating the world’s first “24x7” hourly matched green tariff with Entergy Arkansas.

His earlier public service includes serving in the Cabinet of Governor John Hickenlooper to run the Colorado Energy Office during implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and as a community health engineer with the US Peace Corps. He started his career as an engineer at Dow Chemical, in capital projects engineering, research, and product development roles.

Tanuj lives in Washington DC with his family, where he is an active volunteer supporting his daughters’ sports teams. When he can find the time he enjoys bike riding, travel, chess, and playing the blues harmonica.
